  • The Scouts survived and thrived at our joint survival camp on Salt Island (Strangford Lough) with 3rd Ards troop. Canoed across, slept in hammocks, cooked their food on open fires. Well done!
  • Last year St. Columba's Scouts thoroughly enjoyed an evening of SCUBA diving. Thanks to Queen's University Belfast Sub-Aqua Club for hosting us!

Introduction to Scouting

All Scouts belong to a worldwide family of around 28 million people. In the UK alone there are over 500,000 boys and girls involved with Scouting. It all began in 1907 with Robert Baden-Powell and an experimental camp of 20 boys on Brownsea Island. In Northern Ireland there are six sections spanning the age range 4 to 25. With the motto "Be Prepared" scouting aims to "promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as members of their local, national and international communities" and to create "responsible citizens". The Scout Association is currently headed by Chief Scout Bear Grylls and former Scouts include David Beckham, Paul McCartney, Richard Branson, Tony Blair, David Attenborough, Natasha Kaplinsky and Nelson Mandela. St. Columba's Scouts

St. Columba's Scout Group (5th Ballymena) is in the Mid-Antrim District of Antrim County, Northern Ireland. We are generously hosted by the Church of Ireland Parish of Kilconriola and Ballyclug, meeting in a warm and friendly Church Hall with excellent facilities. The Scouting family at St. Columba's is led by a large group of volunteers, headed by the Group Scout Leader, Christie Colhoun. As leaders, we aim to meet the hopes of every child and provide them with a fun-filled programme in a safe and caring environment. In every section, members are provided with the opportunity for adventure - be it a sleep-over with the Beavers or a 20km hike with some of the Scouts. More information can be found in the respective pages along with details of weekly meetings. While we encourage members to move up through the sections, newcomers are very welcome indeed at any time!
